The directions below are a fascinating read of
instructions, meaning of the designs on the cake and very clever uses of Tootsie Roll candy, fondant and more...
The precious smile says it all!

The cake was made using two chocolate mixes prepared according to box directions and baked in rectangular pan (half sheet cake). I frosted the cake in a white butter cream icing and let it set.
The swirl pattern on the white icing comes from pressing a paper towel onto the crusted icing to smooth out the imperfections. (I understand that Viva paper towels leave no pattern mark, if you're looking for a smooth finish.)
The Brownie Sash on he cake is made of fondant tinted brown. (I didn't have access to ready-made chocolate fondant, but that would probably be preferable than kneading brown paste food coloring into white fondant -- which took several applications and about 30 minutes to work in. If you put it in a ziplock bag as you knead, you'll keep your hands clean.)
Three days prior to decorating the cake,I made the Brownie Insignia and Try-it badges.
The insignia (brown patches) are made from Tootsie Roll candy. (I pt them in microwave for 5-10 seconds before rolling out.)
Writing insignia:
Made with white chocolate using a very small pin-hole tip.
Brownie Try-It badges:
Made from fondant. Roll out your fondant between two skewers -- to ensure even thickness. Use a pizza wheel to cut out the triangle Try-its and the rectangular flag. Pipe on melted chocolate to outline the Try-its. Using a paint brush with paste food coloring and food gel (and/or Food Doodler markers), I painted on the Try-It badges (Troop did this during the last year).
Featured on this cake are Try-its for Listening to the Past, Puppets, Music, Girl Scout Ways, Art to Wear, Dancercise, among others.
Finally, I piped in a shell border and put a pre-made butter cream rose at each corner (just because I had them handy).
A big THANK YOU to Mary Kay
for sharing how she made and
decorated this fabulous cake.
